I believe in research. I believe in technology. I believe in innovation.

But over the last several years, I’ve started asking a different question.

What if we’ve become so focused on optimizing our lives that we’ve forgotten how to actually live them?

I’ve been fortunate to travel extensively throughout the world, and every destination has taught me something different about health, culture, community, and what it means to live well.

But nowhere has influenced me more than Italy.

My husband’s family is from Italy, and he grew up speaking Italian. His family still has a home there, giving us the opportunity to return often. Every visit becomes an opportunity to slow down, observe, and learn—not just about another culture, but about another way of living.

In many ways, though, I think my appreciation for that lifestyle began long before Italy.

I spent a decade living in San Francisco, and to this day, I still consider it home in my heart. While building a career in Silicon Valley, I unknowingly fell in love with a rhythm of life that felt remarkably European.

I walked almost everywhere.

My apartment was small, so life naturally spilled into the neighborhood.

Coffee shops became offices.

Parks became gathering places.

Local restaurants knew your order.

Saturday mornings were spent wandering farmers markets instead of warehouse stores.

You supported the bakery on the corner, the neighborhood bookstore, the family-owned café, and the tiny wine shop where someone always remembered your name.

The city itself encouraged you to participate in your neighborhood.

There was an energy—a fabric of everyday life—that quietly fostered movement, connection, curiosity, and community without anyone calling it “wellness.”

Looking back, I think that’s why San Francisco will always feel like home.

Italy didn’t introduce me to that way of living.

It reminded me how much I had missed it.

Every time I return, I notice the same things.

People linger over lunch.

They walk instead of drive whenever they can.

Children play in the piazza while grandparents watch from nearby benches.

Neighbors stop to talk.

Meals are experiences, not interruptions.

The evening passeggiata isn’t exercise.

It’s simply life.

No one seems obsessed with squeezing every ounce of productivity out of the day.

Life itself becomes the wellness practice.

At first, I assumed the secret had to be the Mediterranean diet.

The olive oil.

The fresh pasta.

The wine.

But the longer I spent there, and the more I reflected on what I’d experienced in San Francisco, the more I realized I was asking the wrong question.

I don’t think wellness is broken.

I think OUR way of living is.

We’ve created a trillion-dollar wellness industry trying to recreate what previous generations simply called...

LIFE!

Community.

Movement.

Purpose.

Conversation.

Belonging.

Shared meals.

Time.

Ironically, this lesson became deeply personal in May when I lost my Oura Ring.

At first, I panicked.

No readiness score.

No sleep score.

No heart rate variability.

No resting heart rate.

For years, those numbers had quietly become part of my morning ritual.

Then something unexpected happened.

I felt...lighter.

I still moved my body.

I still slept.

I still ate well.

I still paid attention to how I felt.

But instead of asking a device how recovered I was, I started asking my own body.

As someone who loves data, that surprised me.

It reminded me that while technology can make us more aware, it can also make us more anxious if we’re not careful.

The healthiest thing I gained wasn’t another metric.

It was trust.

Around the same time, I found myself revisiting the research on the Blue Zones.

Researchers didn’t discover one miracle supplement.

Or one revolutionary workout.

Or one perfect morning routine.

They found people who naturally moved throughout the day.

Who shared meals.

Who knew their neighbors.

Who laughed often.

Who had purpose.

Who belonged to something bigger than themselves.

Those aren’t wellness hacks.

They’re lifestyles.

This is where I sometimes feel caught between two worlds.

People assume that because I own a Pilates studio filled with recovery technology, I believe wellness comes from gadgets.

The truth is almost the opposite.

I’m not anti-biohacking.

I’m pro-science.

I’m pro-curiosity.

I’m pro-evidence.

But I’m against gimmicks masquerading as wellness and marketing that exploits the fears of vulnerable midlife women instead of giving them honest, evidence-based solutions.

Technology should support healthy behaviors.

It should never become the healthy behavior.

At Pilates Lab, we intentionally use evidence-based tools like TheraLight 360+, NuCalm, and PowerPlate because the science behind them is compelling and documented. They can reduce pain, improve recovery, regulate the nervous system, and help people continue doing the things they love.

Science matters.

Evidence matters.

Technology matters.

But only when it supports the life you’re building.

Technology should support healthy behaviors.

It should never become the healthy behavior.

Because no amount of red light can replace a meaningful friendship.

No wearable can substitute for purpose.

No supplement can replace belonging.

No recovery device can recreate laughing around a dinner table with people you love.

The technology matters.

The lifestyle matters more.

That’s why Pilates has always been about so much more than exercise for me.

It’s one hour where people slow down.

Breathe.

Reconnect with their bodies.

Reconnect with themselves.

Sometimes they leave feeling stronger.

Sometimes they leave with a new friend.

Sometimes they leave realizing that what they really needed wasn’t another workout.

It was connection.

Maybe the future of wellness isn’t adding more.

Maybe it’s remembering what we’ve forgotten.

Walk more.

Sit longer.

Support local businesses.

Know your neighbors.

Cook dinner.

Eat slowly.

Call a friend.

Watch the sunset.

Play with your kids.

Choose presence over perfection.

Because maybe the greatest wellness paradox is this:

We’re spending trillions of dollars trying to recreate what previous generations simply called...life.

And maybe the goal isn’t to become better at wellness.

Maybe the goal is to build a life that needs a little less recovering from.

Because, maybe the greatest wellness paradox is this:

We’re spending trillions of dollars trying to recreate what previous generations simply called...life.

And maybe the goal isn’t to become better at wellness.

Maybe the goal is to build a life that needs a little less recovering from.

That realization is exactly why my dear friend, Kimmy Braget (Your Wellness Wagon gals @yourwellnesswagon on insta, and I have spent the last year dreaming up something incredibly special.

In September 2027, we’ll be hosting an intimate immersion retreat in Puglia, Italy—not as another wellness retreat filled with endless optimization, but as an invitation to experience a different rhythm of life.

We’ll move our bodies.

Share long meals around the table.

Explore historic villages.

Walk ancient streets.

Support local artisans and family-owned businesses.

Spend time by the Sea.

Practice Pilates and enjoy sound baths.

Laugh.

Rest.

Connect.

And, perhaps most importantly, rediscover what it feels like to be fully present.

Because I don’t believe the secret to living well is hidden inside another supplement, another wearable, or another morning routine.

I think it’s found in the moments that remind us we’re alive.

If this speaks to your heart, comment “DOLCE VITA” below.

We’ll add you to the very first invitation list when enrollment opens.

I have a feeling it’s is going to be something truly magical, and I can’t wait to share it with you.

Until then…

Take the long lunch.

Walk instead of drive.

Support your neighborhood café.

Call a friend.

Watch the sunset.

Choose presence over perfection.

Because the best parts of life were never meant to be optimized.

They were meant to be lived.

xoxo,

Pilates Lab Shan

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Even an average year was financially rewarding. A bad year could still be around $200,000. A good year was often double that—or more. There were plenty of those years.

Then I became a Pilates instructor.

I opened Pilates Lab.

If you looked only at the numbers, you’d probably think I’d made the worst financial decision of my life.

The reality of building a small business is far different than the fantasy people often imagine. There are months when you’re wondering how you’ll cover payroll, rent, insurance, equipment, marketing, and the next unexpected expense. Instead of climbing a corporate ladder, you’re betting on yourself and hoping the vision you’ve built eventually catches up to the work you’re putting in.

People see the beautiful studio.

They don’t see the revolving business debt.

They don’t see the sleepless nights.

They don’t see the weight of being responsible for other people’s livelihoods.

And honestly?

I wouldn’t trade it.

But the biggest surprise wasn’t the money.

It was losing my hobby.

Before Pilates became my profession, it was where I went to breathe. It regulated my nervous system. It quieted my mind. It wasn’t about productivity or performance. It was simply where I felt most like myself.

Then it became my career.

The thing that once restored me became the thing responsible for payroll, scheduling, marketing, staffing, taxes, social media, client retention, and every decision that keeps a business alive.

I still love Pilates.

In fact, I believe in it more than ever.

But it no longer serves the exact same purpose in my nervous system.

No one really talks about that.

We’re constantly told to follow our passion. Turn your hobby into your career. Monetize what you love.

But here’s the tradeoff.

When everything you love becomes productive, you lose a place to simply play.

And I think that’s especially important in midlife.

By the time we’re in our forties and fifties, life has become beautifully full, but also incredibly demanding. Careers. Kids. Aging parents. Hormones. Relationships. Financial responsibility.

Our calendars are packed, yet so many of us have quietly abandoned the things that once made us feel alive.

Not because we stopped loving them.

Because life got busy.

Or because we turned them into work.

I’ve realized I don’t need another productivity hack.

I don’t need another certification.

I don’t need another business strategy.

I need another hobby.

I’ve always wanted to become a better surfer.

Not to compete.

Not to create content.

Not to turn it into another business.

Just because it looks fun.

Because learning something new reminds us what it feels like to be a beginner again. It asks us to be present. It demands our attention. It gives us permission to fail without attaching our identity to the outcome.

So when my kids go back to school, that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

I’m starting something I’m calling Project Surf.

One or two mornings a week, I’m going to paddle out.

Not because I expect to become great.

Because I expect it to make me better.

Not a better surfer.

A better human.

A calmer mom.

A more creative business owner.

A healthier woman.

Ironically, stepping away from my work may be one of the best things I can do for it.

We’re living in a culture that encourages us to monetize every talent, optimize every hour, and turn every passion into a side hustle.

Maybe we’ve gotten this one backwards.

Maybe every adult needs one thing that never earns a dollar.

One place where there’s no audience.

No performance.

No KPI.

No return on investment.

Just curiosity.

Just movement.

Just joy.

Because hobbies aren’t a luxury.

They’re part of a healthy nervous system.

They’re one of the ways we remember who we are outside of what we produce.

So if you’ve been waiting for permission to learn guitar…

Take the pottery class.

Buy the watercolor paints.

Plant the garden.

Take dance lessons.

Start surfing.

Whatever it is you’ve always wanted to try, don’t wait until you become good.

Start because it brings you back to yourself.

The older I get, the more I believe that success isn’t just about building a meaningful career.

It’s about building a meaningful life.

And sometimes the most important thing you’ll ever do…

…will never make you a single dollar.

So this fall, I’m starting something new.

I’m calling it Project Surf.

Not because I have dreams of becoming a great surfer, but because I need something that’s just mine again. Something that asks nothing of me except to show up, be present, and enjoy being a beginner.

No business plan.

No content strategy.

No expectations.

Just play.

If you’ve been thinking about picking up an old hobby—or finally trying something you’ve always wanted to learn—I hope this is your sign.

And if you’d like to follow along as I navigate the wipeouts, the small wins, and everything I’m learning along the way, welcome aboard.

I have a feeling this is about much more than surfing.

I think it’s about rediscovering the version of ourselves that exists outside of our careers, our responsibilities, and our endless to-do lists.

Maybe the next chapter of midlife isn’t about becoming more productive.

Maybe it’s about becoming more playful.

If you’d like to be part of the journey, follow along.

Welcome to Project Surf.

The paddle out begins soon.

Stay tuned.

It’s all happening.

xoxo,

Pilates Lab Shan

But it’s true.

If you had asked me fifteen years ago what I’d be doing today, owning a Pilates studio wouldn’t have even made the list.

I thought my life was headed in a completely different direction.

I loved my career in the startup world. I loved building teams. Solving impossible problems. Helping grow companies that believed they were creating the future. I loved the energy. The travel. The long hours. The clients. Most of all, I loved the feeling that we were building something bigger than ourselves.

If I’m honest, I also loved what came with it.

The promotions.

The recognition.

The financial success.

The identity.

For a long time, I measured my worth by what I accomplished.

Then life did what it so often does.

It changed the question.

The company I worked for was acquired.

I became a Mother.

Almost overnight, the identity (physically + emotionally) I had spent years building quietly gave way to one I never knew I’d love so deeply.

One of the greatest gifts our family has ever received was the opportunity for me to stay home with our children. Casey worked unbelievably hard to make that possible, and I never take that sacrifice for granted. Those years with Brock, and later Addison, remain some of the most meaningful years of my life.

I wouldn’t trade that season for anything.

But somewhere in the middle of being the best Mom (and wife) I could be, another question quietly surfaced.

Who am I becoming now?

Not because Motherhood wasn’t enough.

It was.

It was everything.

But I also knew there was still a part of me that wanted to build. To create. To contribute. To pour my heart into something that could help other people long after my own children grew up.

That question eventually led me back to Pilates.

Not because I was looking for another career.

Because I was searching for something that felt deeply true.

I thought I was learning Pilates.

What I was really learning was myself.

Along the way, I discovered something I wasn’t expecting.

There was an awful lot of “unwellness”inside wellness.

I wasn’t looking for perfection.

I was looking for belonging.

Instead, I found places that often felt exclusive instead of welcoming. Places that cared more about appearances than education. Places that had forgotten that movement isn’t about looking a certain way or how many followers you have

It’s about helping people feel at home in their own bodies.

That never sat well with me.

Eventually, I found teachers and mentors who reminded me that movement should be rooted in curiosity, anatomy, biomechanics, and teaching the body standing in front of you—not forcing every body to fit the same mold.

That idea changed everything for me.

Because I don’t believe honoring a method means refusing to ask better questions.

I believe it means staying curious.

Then COVID happened.

Studios I’d admired quietly locked their doors forever.

Many of the rehabilitation-focused Pilates studios that had taught me so much simply couldn’t survive.

At the same time, I watched the industry begin shifting in a different direction.

Larger classes.

Faster formats.

More trends (and gimmicky biohacking that preys on vulnerable women).

Different studios serve different people, and there’s room for many approaches.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about the client who didn’t need another workout.

She needed someone to help her understand her body.

The woman recovering from an injury.

The Mom rebuilding after pregnancy.

The person navigating perimenopause or menopause.

The client leaving physical therapy wondering,

“What do I do now?”

I realized something that surprised even me.

I never meant to open another Pilates studio.

I wanted to build a place where people could learn to understand their bodies and have recovery and nervous system regulation be part of the studio.

A place where curiosity and evidence-based practices mattered.

Where education mattered.

Where rehabilitation, strength, recovery, and longevity weren’t separate conversations because the body doesn’t separate them.

That place became Pilates Lab.

Not because I wanted to build another fitness business.

Because I wanted to build something from the heart.

Something I could stand behind.

Something that wasn’t chasing the trend of the month or the next marketing gimmick.

Something that asked one simple question before every decision:

Will this genuinely help someone live a better life?

If the answer is yes, we keep learning.

If the answer isn’t clear yet, we keep asking questions.

That’s the kind of business I want to build.

Slowly.

Thoughtfully.

With integrity.

I don’t know exactly where this journey is going.

Maybe Pilates Lab stays one beautiful studio.

Maybe it becomes something much bigger.

Maybe these essays become a book someday.

I honestly don’t know.

What I do know is this.

I want my children to remember that their Mom had the courage to begin again.

I hope they remember that I chose purpose over appearances.

Integrity over shortcuts.

Curiosity over certainty.

And building something that lasts over building something that simply sells.

Because careers evolve.

Children grow up.

Our identities change.

But if we’re lucky, we eventually find work that feels less like a job and more like an extension of who we are.

Maybe you’re standing at one of those turning points too.

Maybe you’re asking questions you never expected to ask.

Maybe you’re discovering that reinvention doesn’t happen because we planned it.

It happens because life asks us better questions.

Mine eventually led me here.

I’m curious where yours will lead you.

If this essay resonated with you, I’d love to have you subscribe.

Every week I’ll be writing about reinvention, movement, Motherhood, evidence-informed wellness, entrepreneurship, and what it means to choose what lasts over what simply sells.

I’m grateful you’re here.

His first one.

Lake Sequoia.

The same lake. The same YMCA camp. The same winding roads through the trees that I traveled when I was about his age.

I’ve been thinking about it ever since.

Not because I’m worried about him.

Honestly, I think he’s having the time of his life.

He’s there with his best friend. He’s skating all day. Swimming in the lake. Hanging out in the cabins. Eating in the dining hall. Competing for the cleanest cabin award. Making memories he’ll probably talk about for years.

What surprised me was how emotional I felt after I left.

I didn’t expect that part.

When I was a kid, camp looked a little different.

Our parents dropped us off in a parking lot, and we boarded a school bus.

The bus took us up to camp.

That was it.

I don’t remember a big check-in process. I don’t remember parents helping us settle into our cabins. I don’t remember anyone making our beds or walking us through those first nervous moments.

You got on the bus and off you went.

This felt different.

Addi and I got to be part of the whole experience.

We checked him in.

We loaded money onto his camp account so he could buy snacks and treats at the camp store.

We hand-delivered the letters he’d open throughout the week—little notes tucked away for certain days, written with love and care.

We walked through camp together.

And maybe because I was part of all those little details, it felt more real.

More personal.

More emotional.

When we pulled into camp, I was surprised by something.

It didn’t feel smaller than I remembered.

It felt more magical.

The lake was beautiful.

The trees seemed endless.

The whole place felt full of possibility.

For a moment, I wasn’t just Brock’s Mom dropping him off at camp.

I was nine years old again.

The cabins looked much the same, but the skate side of camp had its own personality.

The cabin doors were covered in skate stickers layered over years and years of campers who had come before.

I smiled immediately.

It brought me right back to skate culture growing up.

The skaters.

The surfers.

The kids playing guitar.

The guys who always seemed so cool and carefree.

And then I found myself laughing because I suddenly realized something.

My son is becoming one of those guys.

The little boy who used to hold my hand is now carrying a skateboard toward a cabin covered in skate stickers.

And somehow that felt both impossible and exactly right.

Brock was excited.

You could tell.

But I could also see he was nervous.

Not scared.

Just standing at the edge of something new.

Trying to be brave.

Trying to be cool.

Trying not to let anyone know he was a little uncertain.

At first he told me I could leave.

“You don’t have to stay.”

“You can go.”

But then a group of parents started walking toward the cabins to help their kids get settled.

And he changed his mind.

“Yeah, you can come.”

“Everyone else’s parents are going.”

So I followed him.

I helped him put on his fitted sheet.

We got his things organized.

We made his bunk feel like his.

The most ordinary things.

The kinds of things Mothers do every day without even thinking about them.

But standing there, I felt something unexpected.

For a moment, it wasn’t just Brock’s first time at camp.

It was mine too.

Not literally.

But emotionally.

Because I suddenly realized I was seeing something I don’t think anyone ever saw in me.

I was watching the excitement and nervousness meet on my son’s face.

I could see both.

The confidence.

The uncertainty.

The anticipation.

The courage.

And it hit me that nobody was there to witness that in me.

I don’t even remember how I felt when I first went to camp.

I remember loving it.

I remember the lake.

I remember the friendships.

I remember the fun.

But I don’t remember what it felt like getting on that bus.

I don’t remember if I was scared.

I don’t remember if I was nervous.

I don’t remember if I wanted my family close by.

Maybe I did.

Maybe I didn’t.

I honestly don’t know.

But standing there with Brock, I realized how much it mattered that Addi and I were there.

Not hovering.

Not rescuing.

Not preventing him from growing.

Just there.

A familiar smile.

A reassuring face.

A reminder that the people who love him most were excited for him too.

I think that’s the moment that got me.

The moment our two worlds collided.

The same lake.

The same age.

The same wonder of camp for the first time.

But a very different experience.

Because this time, there was someone there to witness it.

To see the excitement.

To see the nerves.

To say, without even saying it, “You’ve got this.”

Maybe this isn’t really about camp at all.

Maybe it’s about this summer.

Just last week, Brock was at surf camp.

Every morning he’d grab his board and run straight toward the water.

No hesitation.

No fear.

No looking back.

Just pure excitement.

I found myself standing on the beach watching him charge into the waves and realizing he’s not the same little kid he was even a year ago.

And now this week, I’m watching him carry a skateboard toward a cabin at sleep-away camp.

Making friends.

Trying new things.

Building confidence.

Finding his place in the world.

Little by little, he’s becoming more independent.

More capable.

More himself.

And while there is a small part of me that misses the little boy who wanted me for everything, a much bigger part of me is incredibly proud.

Because this is exactly what we hope for as parents.

Not that they stay little.

That they grow.

That they become brave enough to step into their own lives.

I think that’s what I’ve been feeling these last couple of days.

Not sadness.

Not worry.

Just the overwhelming realization that my little boy is becoming an amazing young man.

And what a privilege it is to witness that.

Last week he grabbed a surfboard and ran straight into the waves.

This week he grabbed a skateboard and walked toward a cabin at camp.

And somewhere in between, I realized my little boy is becoming his own person.

Confident.

Kind.

Curious.

Adventurous.

Ready for experiences that are bigger than home.

Ready to create stories that don’t include me at the center of them.

And that’s exactly how it should be.

On the drive home from camp, Addi wanted to play Taylor Swift’s Never Grow Up.

Then she started singing it to me from the back seat.

Of all the songs.

Of all the moments.

There I was, driving away from my son’s first sleep-away camp, trying not to cry, while my sweet little girl sang:

“Don’t you ever grow up…”

Life has a funny way of knowing exactly where to find your heart.

I looked at her in the rearview mirror and just smiled.

Because life truly is beautiful.

These are the moments.

These are the days.

The surf camps.

The skate camps.

The songs from the back seat.

The fitted sheets on bunk beds.

The nervous smiles.

The brave goodbyes.

The little hands that eventually stop reaching for yours because you’ve given them the confidence to reach for the world instead.

One day these moments will live only in photographs and memories.

But right now, they’re happening.

Right now, they’re ours.

And for all the emotions that come with watching childhood move faster than we’d like, I wouldn’t trade a single second of it.

What a gift it is to be their Mom

xoxo,

Pilates lab Shan

I’d love to hear from you.

Was there a moment when you suddenly realized your child wasn’t so little anymore?

Or maybe a place that brought you back to your own childhood in a way you didn’t expect?

Those are the moments that seem to stay with us.

The ones where, for just a second, the child we once were and the person we’ve become meet in the same place.

I had a physical therapy appointment this week that made me laugh out loud.

Not because it was funny.

Because after years of figure skating, years of Pilates, years of strength training, years of being obsessed with movement and biomechanics, someone finally connected dots that I’ve been feeling in my body for decades.

The funny part?

The place that hurts isn’t always the problem.

I’ve spent years dealing with neck pain.

I’ve dealt with back pain.

I’ve dealt with foot pain.

And every time I went looking for answers, someone wanted to look at the painful body part in isolation.

The neck.

The foot.

The back.

The SI joint.

The shoulder.

The hip.

Everyone had a theory.

Everyone had a treatment.

Everyone had a specialty.

And yet somehow I always felt like I was missing the bigger picture.

Because the body doesn’t work in pieces.

My latest example?

I went to physical therapy because I’ve been noticing a familiar pattern in my body. My left side feels tight. Compressed. Overworked. My low back has been talking to me. My outer hip has been talking to me. I’ve suspected for years that decades of figure skating left me with some very specific compensation patterns.

What we discovered wasn’t that my back was broken.

It wasn’t that my SI joint was broken.

It wasn’t that I needed surgery.

It was that my body had become really, really good at compensating.

My right foot doesn’t load the ground particularly well.

My right glute doesn’t naturally want to show up to the party.

So my left side has spent years doing extra work.

My left side became the employee of the month every month for thirty years.

And eventually even your most reliable employee burns out.

That’s the thing nobody talks about enough.

The painful area is often the victim.

Not the criminal.

This is exactly why I became a comprehensively trained Pilates instructor. It’s why I went back and became a NASM Certified Personal Trainer. It’s why I spend so much time studying movement, strength, nutrition, hormones, recovery, and healthy aging.

Because no single thing fixed me.

Not Pilates alone.

Not strength training alone.

Not physical therapy alone.

Not red light therapy alone.

Not hormone therapy alone.

Not nutrition alone.

The answer was never one thing.

The answer was putting the pieces together.

Over the years I’ve become increasingly frustrated watching midlife women get sold quick fixes.

We’re told to buy the supplement.

Try the gadget.

Get the injection.

Follow the trend.

Meanwhile, nobody is asking the bigger questions.

Are you strong?

Are you sleeping?

Are your hormones optimized?

Are you eating enough protein?

Do you understand how your body moves?

Do you have a recovery strategy?

Are you carrying stress in your body all day long?

This is why I invested in a medical-grade red and near-infrared light bed at Pilates Lab. Not because I believe in magic solutions, but because I believe in stacking the deck in your favor.

The goal is to support recovery.

Support circulation.

Support cellular health.

Support healing.

The same reason I believe strength training belongs alongside Pilates.

Pilates taught me awareness.

Strength training gave me capacity.

Both mattered.

Another piece of the puzzle that doesn’t get talked about enough is hormones.

As estrogen declines in midlife, many women experience changes in recovery, joint comfort, sleep quality, muscle mass, and overall resilience. For the right candidate, working with a qualified provider on hormone therapy can be life-changing.

But hormones are not the whole answer either.

The body is a system.

And systems require more than one lever.

But perhaps the biggest lesson I’ve learned isn’t physical at all.

It’s emotional.

Because when I look back at periods of my life when my upper traps were constantly tight, my jaw was clenched, my neck hurt every day, and my shoulders felt like they were carrying bricks, I can honestly say it wasn’t just a muscle problem.

It was a life problem.

A boundary problem.

A stress problem.

A carrying-the-weight-of-the-world problem.

Especially for women.

Especially for mothers.

Especially for high-achievers.

Especially for the women who spend their lives taking care of everyone else.

Sometimes when your upper traps are screaming at you, your body is asking a question your mind hasn’t answered yet.

What needs a boundary?

What are you carrying that doesn’t belong to you?

What feels unsafe?

What feels unresolved?

What feels heavy?

What would make you feel more protected?

What would make you feel lighter?

Now before anyone twists that into “it’s all in your head,” let me be very clear.

Pain is real.

Biomechanics matter.

Strength matters.

Mobility matters.

Hormones matter.

Physical therapy matters.

Nutrition matters.

But your nervous system matters too.

Your body is always listening to your life.

And eventually it tells the truth.

This is why I believe the best practitioners don’t just look at body parts.

They look at people.

The whole person.

The whole story.

The whole system.

Because in my experience, the biggest breakthroughs happen when you stop chasing symptoms and start understanding the environment that created them.

Sometimes surgery is absolutely necessary.

Sometimes imaging finds a problem that truly needs intervention.

Sometimes specialists save lives.

I’m married to a trauma surgeon. I’ve seen firsthand how extraordinary medicine can be.

But before you assume the painful area is the source of the problem, make sure someone has looked at the bigger picture.

Because what I’ve learned through twenty-five years of Pilates, years of strength training, my own health journey, and countless conversations with clients is this:

The place you feel pain isn’t always the problem.

Sometimes it’s simply the part of your body that’s been working the hardest to protect you all along.

xo,

Pilates Lab length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

There is a particular kind of grief that arrives in midlife.

It isn't the grief of aging.

It isn't the grief of watching your children grow up too fast.

It isn't even the grief of losing someone you love.

It's the grief of realizing you may never receive something you've been waiting for your entire life.

For me, that realization came in the form of a Mother.

For someone else, it may be a Father.

A sibling.

A spouse.

A friend.

A mentor.

A version of yourself you thought you would become.

Whatever form it takes, the pain is the same.

You spend years believing that if you just try a little harder, explain yourself a little better, love a little bigger, maybe this time things will be different.

Maybe this time you'll finally be seen.

Maybe this time you'll finally be understood.

Maybe this time you'll finally receive the love, validation, acceptance, or acknowledgment you've been chasing since childhood.

Then one day you realize something heartbreaking.

You cannot heal a relationship by yourself.

And you cannot force someone to see what they are unwilling to see.

That realization broke my heart.

It also set me free.

For years, I thought my healing journey was about Pilates.

Nutrition.

Hormones.

Strength training.

Sleep.

Red light therapy.

Nervous system regulation.

And all of those things matter.

They matter tremendously.

But the older I get, the more convinced I become that some of the deepest healing happens when we stop carrying emotional burdens that were never ours to carry.

I see it every day.

Women walk into my studio convinced they are broken.

Their shoulders live somewhere near their ears.

Their jaws are clenched.

Their breathing is shallow.

Their bodies are exhausted.

Many are navigating perimenopause or menopause.

Many are experiencing symptoms that seem disconnected and impossible to explain.

Weight gain.

Insomnia.

Anxiety.

Autoimmune conditions.

Chronic pain.

Fatigue.

Inflammation.

A sense that something feels off, even when all the lab work says they should be fine.

And while I would never suggest that every symptom is caused by unresolved emotional trauma, I have become deeply curious about how often the two travel together.

I've spent years studying movement, nutrition, nervous system regulation, hormones, and human behavior.

I continue to be a student of this work because it fascinates me.

What I have observed over and over again is that the body often carries stories the mind has worked very hard to forget.

The woman who spent decades trying to earn love.

The woman who learned that her needs were inconvenient.

The woman who became responsible for everyone else's emotions.

The woman who learned to stay small to keep the peace.

The woman who spent her life performing instead of belonging.

Eventually, the body starts asking for attention.

Not because it's broken.

Because it's tired.

The phrase "the body keeps the score" has become popular for good reason.

The body remembers what the mind minimizes.

The nervous system remembers what the family rewrites.

The muscles remember what the mouth never says.

The immune system often responds to stress we convince ourselves we're handling just fine.

For much of my life, I believed healing meant becoming stronger.

Now I think healing often means becoming more honest.

Honest about what hurt.

Honest about what was missing.

Honest about the relationships that continue to drain us.

Honest about the stories we've been telling ourselves to survive.

One of the hardest truths I've had to face is that I may never have the Mother I deserved.

Not because I wasn't worthy of that love.

Not because I didn't try hard enough.

Not because I failed.

But because some people are simply unable to meet us where we need them to.

For a long time, I thought acceptance meant approval.

It doesn't.

Acceptance simply means seeing reality clearly.

And once we see reality clearly, we can stop fighting it.

That is where freedom begins.

Not in getting the apology.

Not in changing the other person.

Not in finally being understood.

Freedom begins when we stop waiting.

When we stop waiting for the apology.

Stop waiting for the recognition.

Stop waiting for someone else to become who we needed them to be.

The energy we once spent chasing can finally be redirected toward living.

Toward healing.

Toward creating something different.

Toward becoming the person we needed when we were younger.

What I have come to believe is that healing in midlife is rarely about one thing.

It is not just hormones.

It is not just nutrition.

It is not just strength training.

It is not just therapy.

It is not just nervous system work.

It is all of it.

The women I see thriving in their forties, fifties, and beyond are not necessarily the women with the perfect supplement protocol or the most optimized routine.

They are the women willing to tell themselves the truth.

The women willing to stop abandoning themselves.

The women willing to grieve what they didn't receive.

The women willing to feel what they spent years avoiding.

The women willing to stop carrying responsibilities that never belonged to them.

I have spent years studying movement because I believe movement heals.

I have spent years studying nutrition because I believe food matters.

I have spent years studying hormones because they profoundly affect how we feel.

But the longer I do this work, the more convinced I become that true wellness requires emotional honesty.

Not blame.

Not victimhood.

Not living in the past.

Honesty.

Because we cannot heal what we refuse to acknowledge.

And we cannot move forward while carrying the weight of wounds we are pretending don't exist.

The longer I work with women, the more convinced I become that healing in midlife is not just biological.

It is emotional.

It is relational.

It is physical.

It is spiritual.

And often, the symptom is not the beginning of the story.

It is the messenger.

If you've found yourself carrying old wounds into midlife, I want you to know you're not alone.

I see you.

I see the exhaustion.

I see the grief.

I see the strength it took to survive.

And I see the courage it takes to finally choose yourself.

This is not about blame.

It is about awareness.

Because awareness creates choice.

And choice creates change.

The women who inspire me most are not the women who have avoided pain.

They are the women who have been willing to look directly at it.

To feel it.

To process it.

To learn from it.

And then to keep moving forward.

Aging well isn't just about building muscle.

It's not just about optimizing hormones.

It's not just about nutrition, supplements, cold plunges, or red light therapy.

The most profound form of optimization I have witnessed is the willingness to heal.

To stop abandoning yourself.

To stop carrying burdens that were never yours.

To stop waiting for permission to live fully.

The day I stopped waiting for the Mother I deserved was It felt like something bigger was happening across the industry.

Then recently, Hailey Bieber made headlines suggesting Pilates is becoming a fad.

The internet predictably exploded.

Pilates instructors defended Pilates. Influencers defended influencers. Comment sections filled with hot takes.

But I don’t think the real conversation is about Hailey Bieber.

And I don’t think the real conversation is even about Pilates.

I think Pilates is simply revealing a larger shift happening throughout the wellness industry.

Because whenever something works, the same cycle tends to repeat itself.

A method gains popularity.

Investors notice.

Studios multiply.

Teacher training gets shorter.

The experience becomes standardized.

The original philosophy gets diluted.

Eventually people stop getting the results they expected.

Then comes the correction.

We’ve watched it happen with yoga.

We’ve watched it happen with SoulCycle.

And now we’re watching it happen with Pilates.

Not because Pilates doesn’t work.

But because much of what is being marketed as Pilates today no longer resembles the original method.

And that’s where things get interesting.

Because I believe the Pilates industry is approaching a correction.

And what happens next will tell us a lot about the future of wellness itself.

The Wellness Industry Has an Optimization Problem

For the last decade, wellness has largely been dominated by one idea:

Optimization.

Optimize your sleep.

Optimize your hormones.

Optimize your glucose.

Optimize your workouts.

Optimize your productivity.

Optimize your recovery.

Optimize everything.

The result?

We’ve never had more information about wellness.

Yet many people feel more exhausted, overwhelmed, stressed, and disconnected from their bodies than ever before.

Somewhere along the way, wellness became another form of performance.

Another thing to perfect.

Another thing to track.

Another thing to win.

But human beings aren’t machines.

We’re living systems.

And living systems don’t thrive through constant optimization.

They thrive through adaptation, resilience, and recovery.

The most sophisticated wellness intervention in the world cannot outperform a dysregulated nervous system.

That’s why I believe the next decade of wellness will look very different from the last.

Pilates Was Never Meant to Be a Trend

One of the biggest misconceptions in the industry today is that Pilates equals reformer.

It doesn’t.

Pilates is a comprehensive movement system.

The reformer is simply one piece of that system.

Joseph Pilates called his method Contrology.

The goal wasn’t to burn calories.

The goal wasn’t to create exhaustion.

The goal wasn’t to leave class shaking.

The goal was to develop awareness, control, balance, strength, mobility, and a deeper understanding of how the body functions.

Joseph Pilates spent years studying movement.

He famously observed animals in nature and became fascinated by how efficiently they moved.

How they rotated.

How they extended.

How they twisted.

How they moved through all planes of motion with strength and ease.

His method reflected those observations.

The original Pilates system wasn’t built around repetitive sagittal-plane movements or chasing a burn.

It was built around helping people move better.

Think better.

Feel better.

Function better.

The goal was always education.

Not entertainment.

The Difference Between Exercise and Understanding

This is where I believe the real value of Pilates exists.

The best Pilates teachers aren’t simply exercise instructors.

They’re movement educators.

Their job isn’t just to tell you what exercise comes next.

Their job is to help you understand your body.

Why does your low back hurt?

Why does one hip feel tighter than the other?

Why are your glutes not contributing to movement?

Why does your neck always carry tension?

Why does your balance feel different than it did ten years ago?

The answers to those questions matter far more than whether you completed another set of repetitions.

The real magic of Pilates has never been the exercises themselves.

It’s the awareness those exercises create.

And awareness is becoming increasingly valuable in a world filled with noise.

The Future Belongs to Comprehensively Trained Practitioners

Here’s my prediction.

The future belongs to practitioners who understand the body deeply.

Not just Pilates.

Not just strength training.

Not just recovery.

All of it.

As Baby Boomers age and Gen X enters midlife, we’re seeing rising rates of osteopenia, osteoporosis, chronic pain, metabolic dysfunction, stress-related illness, and mobility limitations.

People aren’t simply looking for a workout.

They’re looking for answers.

They’re looking for guidance.

They’re looking for practitioners who can help them understand what their body needs now—not what it needed twenty years ago.

This is where comprehensively trained Pilates educators become incredibly valuable.

Comprehensive training requires years of study.

Anatomy.

Biomechanics.

Movement assessment.

Multiple apparatus.

Hundreds of teaching hours.

The mat.

The reformer.

The chair.

The Cadillac.

The barrel.

The entire system.

These practitioners understand movement patterns, compensations, asymmetries, and the relationship between mobility, strength, stability, and function.

In many ways, they help bridge the gap between rehabilitation and fitness.

Not replacing physical therapists.

Not replacing trainers.

But complementing both.

The Future Is Integration

One of the biggest mistakes I see in wellness is treating movement disciplines as competing philosophies.

Pilates versus strength training.

Mobility versus lifting.

Recovery versus performance.

The future isn’t either-or.

The future is integration.

Pilates teaches awareness.

Strength training builds muscle and bone.

Recovery supports adaptation.

Nervous system regulation creates resilience.

We need all of it.

Especially in midlife.

You cannot load a dysfunctional movement pattern forever and expect good outcomes.

And you cannot maintain muscle mass through mobility work alone.

The future belongs to practitioners who understand how these pieces work together.

That’s one of the reasons I became a NASM-certified personal trainer after already completing comprehensive Pilates education.

Not because Pilates wasn’t enough.

But because the future demands a broader understanding of human performance.

Enter the Regenerative Era

I believe we are entering what I call the Regenerative Era.

An era where recovery is no longer considered optional.

An era where nervous system health becomes part of the wellness conversation.

An era where resilience becomes more valuable than intensity.

An era where people stop asking:

“How hard can I push?”

And start asking:

“How well can I recover?”

This shift changes everything.

It changes how we exercise.

How we age.

How we define health.

How we define fitness.

How we define success.

You can wear every wearable.

Track every metric.

Follow every protocol.

And still struggle if your nervous system is chronically overwhelmed.

Especially in midlife, stress becomes more expensive.

Recovery becomes more important.

And resilience becomes something we must actively cultivate.

This is why I believe the future of wellness isn’t simply movement.

And it isn’t simply biohacking.

It’s the integration of movement, strength, recovery, nervous system regulation, and human connection.

My Prediction

The studios that thrive over the next decade won’t necessarily be the biggest.

They’ll be the most effective.

The practitioners who thrive won’t necessarily be the loudest.

They’ll be the most educated.

The future belongs to those who can help people understand their bodies again.

Pilates isn’t dying.

It’s maturing.

The fad phase is ending.

The education phase is beginning.

And for comprehensively trained teachers, movement educators, physical therapists, wellness practitioners, and lifelong students of the body, I believe the best years are still ahead.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Do you think the wellness industry is moving toward deeper education and more personalized care?

Or are we continuing to move toward larger, faster, and more entertainment-driven experiences?

Leave a comment below. I’d love to continue the conversation.

xoxo,

Pilates Lab Shan

Healing Creates an Identity Crisis

I have a theory…

Vitality Vault Lifestyle

Some of the most successful people in the world are fueled by wounds they haven't healed.

Not because they're weak.

Because pain is an incredibly effective motivator.

Fear of failure.

Fear of being overlooked.

Fear of disappointing people.

Fear of not being enough.

Those fears can build remarkable careers, successful businesses, and impressive lives.

For a long time, they built mine.

I grew up learning that performance was rewarded. Excellence was noticed. Achievement mattered. Somewhere along the way, I internalized the belief that success and worthiness were connected.

The more I achieved, the more valuable I felt.

So I became very good at achieving.

I carried that mindset into my career in tech. I climbed the corporate ladder. I chased goals, promotions, and financial success. I worked hard, performed well, and built a life that looked successful from the outside.

But beneath it all was a question I didn't yet know I was asking:

Am I enough?

The problem with using achievement to answer that question is that the answer never lasts.

There is always another goal.

Another milestone.

Another promotion.

Another mountain to climb.

Then life interrupted the story.

I became a mother.

I left corporate America.

I started Pilates Lab with nothing but a vision, my savings account, and a belief that there was a better way to approach movement, wellness, and healing.

Nearly three years later, there are still many days when I work incredibly hard and take home little to nothing financially.

The younger version of me would have thought that was insanity.

Why work this hard without the guarantee of financial reward?

Why sacrifice certainty?

Why choose a path that doesn't immediately validate your efforts?

Because something had shifted.

Healing had changed the fuel source.

I still care about success.

I still have ambitious goals.

I still want to build something meaningful.

But I no longer believe my worth rises and falls with a bank account, a title, a social media following, or someone else's approval.

And that is where the identity crisis begins.

Because healing doesn't just help you feel better.

Healing changes who you are.

The overachiever begins to loosen her grip.

The people-pleaser starts saying no.

The perfectionist gets tired.

The performer steps off the stage.

The identities that once helped you survive slowly begin to dissolve.

And for a period of time, you don't quite know who you are anymore.

You aren't the old version of yourself.

But you haven't fully stepped into the new one either.

It's uncomfortable.

It's lonely.

It's confusing.

It's also completely normal.

The caterpillar doesn't simply grow wings.

It dissolves.

Inside the cocoon, it becomes something entirely different before emerging as a butterfly.

Healing often feels the same way.

Your relationships change.

Your friendships change.

Family dynamics shift.

Your tolerance for unhealthy behavior disappears.

Boundaries appear where none existed before.

The life that once felt familiar no longer fits.

Not because you're broken.

Because you're growing.

I have come to believe that emotional maturity isn't the absence of ambition.

It's the ability to separate ambition from worthiness.

It's understanding that money matters, but doesn't define you.

Success matters, but doesn't complete you.

Visibility matters, but doesn't validate you.

The work becomes an expression of who you are instead of proof of who you are.

Ironically, I think this is why many people avoid healing.

Not because they're afraid of facing their wounds.

Because they're afraid of losing the identity built around those wounds.

Healing asks you to release the version of yourself that learned to survive through performance.

And that can feel like a death.

The beautiful truth is that on the other side of that death is freedom.

Freedom to build.

Freedom to create.

Freedom to serve.

Freedom to succeed without needing success to tell you who you are.

The caterpillar probably thinks it's dying.

The butterfly would tell a very different story.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Have you ever experienced a season where healing forced you to redefine success?

Xoxo,

Pilates Lab Shan

Something that has been sitting heavily on my heart lately, and something this experience in Bali has given me more time and space to reflect on, is how much division exists in the world right now.

And it is not just politics.

It is not just wars, leadership, or what we see online. It feels like it is everywhere.

Even within the movement and wellness world, spaces that are supposed to help people heal, reconnect, and feel more at home in their bodies, there is so much fragmentation, superiority, and animosity around what is and is not “correct.”

The Pilates industry, in particular, feels like it is going through a major identity shift right now as Pilates becomes increasingly trendy, commercialized, and commoditized. Investors are flocking toward it. Large fitness concepts are capitalizing on it. Social media is reshaping it. And somewhere within all of that noise, people are fighting over ownership of what Pilates should be.

Only classical Pilates is correct.
Only contemporary Pilates is correct.
Only Lagree works.
Only strength training matters.
Only yoga is real mindfulness.

Honestly, I think this mentality completely misses the point.

I say this as someone who exists through multiple lenses. I am a NASM personal trainer. I am comprehensively trained in Pilates through both classical and evidence-based methodologies. I teach Pilates. I strength train. I deeply love yoga. I am currently on a yoga retreat in Bali practicing twice daily, and I have found so much beauty in reconnecting with that practice again.

None of these practices cancel each other out.

In fact, they inform each other beautifully.

The future of movement, wellness, and healing is not going to belong to the people who stay rigidly attached to one ideology while attacking everyone else.

It is going to belong to the people who stay curious.

The future belongs to the teachers, practitioners, and healers who remain lifelong students. The people willing to evolve. The people willing to learn across disciplines. The people humble enough to recognize that no one methodology owns human movement.

Because movement has always evolved through shared inspiration.

Look at Pilates mat work. There are obvious parallels to yoga. Breathwork. Rolling patterns. Spinal articulation. Bridges. Mobility flows. Nervous system regulation. So many movement methodologies throughout history overlap because they are all observing the same human body.

No one invented movement.

We are all building upon centuries of human understanding, embodiment, healing, and observation. And I think that is a beautiful thing.

The people who concern me are the ones who stop being students. The ones who become so attached to being “the expert” that they stop listening, evolving, and questioning.

That mentality exists far beyond movement.

We are seeing it politically. Socially. Culturally. People becoming deeply attached to one worldview, one ideology, one identity, one version of “truth,” without ever stepping outside of their own lens long enough to ask questions.

But growth requires curiosity.

I question everything.

Some things I learned during Pilates training still resonate deeply with me. Some things no longer align with current evidence-based research and biomechanics. Both things can exist at the same time.

That does not diminish Pilates. It allows it to evolve responsibly.

For me, the clients who come into Pilates privates are rarely just looking for a workout. They are trying to understand their body better. Usually there is pain involved. Disconnection. Nervous system dysregulation. Compensation patterns. Fear around movement. A feeling that something is “off,” even if no one has fully explained why.

This is where comprehensive training matters. Anatomy matters. Biomechanics matter. Somatic cueing matters. Tactile touch matters. Nervous system awareness matters.

But that does not mean I ignore inspiration from outside methodologies.

Right now, I am studying vagus nerve breathwork and reflexology because I am fascinated by how stress, trauma, emotional processing, and nervous system dysregulation physically show up in the body. That curiosity makes me a better teacher. Not a less legitimate one.

Traveling has reminded me how dangerous narrow-mindedness can become.

The more you see the world, the more cultures you experience, the more conversations you have with people outside your immediate bubble, the more you realize we are all far more alike than we are different.

We all want peace.
We all want health.
We all want connection.
We all want purpose.
We all want to feel safe.
We all want to belong.

And maybe now more than ever, we need less superiority and more openness.

Less tribalism and more curiosity.

Less “this is the only way.”
More “what can I learn from this?”

Because the moment we stop learning from one another is the moment we stop evolving.

If you agree lmk your thoughts in comments 🤍

There was something profoundly humbling about standing barefoot against ancient Balinese stone temples dating back over a thousand years.

Soft organic stone shaped by water, time, ritual, and prayer.

At one point, I placed my hands against the temple walls and realized those stones had witnessed generations before me moving through grief, healing, forgiveness, hope, ceremony, and release.

Women like me.
Mothers before me.
People carrying pain they could not always name.

The water moved continuously through the fountains as if reminding us that healing was never meant to be stagnant. That we were never meant to hold onto everything forever.

And somewhere between the prayer, the water, the incense, and the stone, I realized how much of healing is learning to release what no longer belongs to us.

Part of my journey in Bali has been reflecting on intergenerational trauma, self-image, and the way women speak to themselves internally.

It is so easy to remind our friends that they are beautiful, worthy, kind, enough. Yet so many of us carry an inner dialogue about ourselves that we would never allow someone else to speak aloud.

So many women were raised by Mothers who were emotionally unequipped themselves. Mothers carrying their own pain, shame, fear, survival patterns, and unmet needs. And whether intentional or not, those wounds often get passed down.

I have spent years working on that. And I am proud to say I have set that stone down.

I have not carried it forward to my daughter. I will never hand her the same weight.

Instead, I placed a crown of flowers and light upon her head the day she was born. I want her to feel deeply loved, deeply safe, deeply enough exactly as she is.

Breaking intergenerational trauma takes courage. It is beautiful work, but it is also incredibly heavy work. It can feel isolating. Misunderstood. Lonely at times.

Inside the water temple, some of the most memorable fountains to me were the ones centered around forgiveness and release.

One invited you to ask forgiveness for the things you have said or done that you wish to release.

Another invited you to release the hurt caused by others. The words, wounds, judgments, and pain we continue carrying in our bodies long after the moment itself has passed.

It reminded me how deeply emotional pain lives inside the physical body.

Women walk into Pilates carrying the weight of the world in their necks, shoulders, jaws, hips, and nervous systems. So many have been told they simply have “non-specific pain” while silently suffering for years.

I see them. I understand them.

Through years of work in evidence-based Pilates, nervous system regulation, recovery modalities, Reiki, and The Body Story Method, I have learned that we cannot separate the body from the mind.

This understanding became the foundation for Pilates Lab and The LAB Method™:
Lengthen. Align. Biohack.

Because healing is never just one piece of the puzzle.

Movement alone is not enough if the nervous system is dysregulated. Biohacking tools are not enough if the mind is living in survival mode. Strength is not enough if we still believe we are unworthy.

True healing happens when mind, body, and spirit begin working together in synergy.

Bali reminded me that maturity sometimes looks like choosing a different path than the one we were handed.

A softer path.
A healthier path.
A more self-accepting path.

One where we finally learn to see ourselves through the same compassionate lens we offer everyone else.

And maybe healing is simply this:

Learning that we do not have to carry every stone we were handed.

xoxo,

Shannon, your Pilates Lab movement architect

There are trips you take to escape your life.

And then there are trips that quietly remind you why you built your life the way you did in the first place.

Today in Ubud felt like the latter.

When I was younger, I traveled extensively by myself. Long before I became a mother, a wife, a business owner, or part of the nonstop machine of modern adulthood, I learned how to move through the world slowly. I learned how to sit in cafés for hours watching people. How to wander cities without an agenda. How to immerse myself in culture, ritual, sound, architecture, spirituality, and conversation.

Those experiences shaped me more than I realized at the time.

They taught me how deeply environment impacts the nervous system. They taught me that healing isn’t always clinical. Sometimes healing is music. Sometimes it’s community. Sometimes it’s silence. Sometimes it’s being reminded that there are entire cultures that still prioritize presence over productivity.

Somewhere along the way, especially in America, we lost that.

We optimized ourselves into exhaustion.

Everything became productivity-driven. Faster. Bigger. More scalable. More efficient. More transactional.

And wellness itself became fragmented.

Movement over here.
Nutrition over there.
Recovery in another building.
Mental health somewhere else.
Community almost nowhere.

We began treating human beings like separate systems instead of interconnected organisms.

That disconnect is one of the reasons I left corporate tech years ago.

I remember looking around and realizing so many people were successful on paper but completely disconnected from themselves physically, emotionally, spiritually, and relationally. Chronic stress became normalized. Burnout became a badge of honor. Even fitness started mirroring hustle culture.

Pack people in.
Push them through.
Scale at all costs.

The soul quietly disappeared from so many spaces.

When I started my Pilates journey and eventually built Pilates Lab, I knew I wanted to create something different. Something slower. More tactile. More human. More restorative. More regenerative.

Not wellness as performance.
Wellness as reconnection.

This trip to Bali has affirmed that vision in ways I can’t fully articulate yet.

Today we experienced a sound healing session at Pyramids of Chi followed by time at The Yoga Barn, and I found myself emotional in a way I didn’t expect.

Not because I discovered something entirely new.

But because I realized the future of wellness isn’t actually about more technology, more optimization, or more trends.

It’s about integration.

It’s about creating spaces where movement, nervous system regulation, recovery, human connection, nutrition, emotional health, and purpose all coexist together.

Because they were never supposed to be separated in the first place.

And ironically, as AI accelerates and our world becomes even more digitally connected, I believe humans are going to crave this more than ever.

We are entering a time where many people may lose not only jobs, but identity. Purpose. Creativity. Ritual. Human connection.

I worry about a future where people are technically “connected” but spiritually numb. Productive but passionless. Existing without truly feeling alive.

That is why I believe the regenerative era of movement is here.

Not just Pilates.
Not just fitness.
Not just recovery.

But fully integrated wellness experiences designed to help people reconnect with themselves again.

This trip expanded my vision of what a healing sanctuary can be.

Not a commodity-based fitness studio.
Not biohacking for the sake of aesthetics.
Not wellness as luxury signaling.

But spaces that help people regulate, reconnect, create, heal, and remember who they are beneath the noise.

The more connected we become digitally, the more essential intentional disconnection becomes.

And somewhere between the sounds of the jungle, the resonance of Tibetan bowls, conversations with strangers who no longer feel like strangers, and moments of stillness I haven’t given myself in years, I realized something:

I am exactly where I need to be.

And I’m also just getting started.

xoxo,

Pilates Lab Shan

It’s almost my birthday.

And for the first time in my life, I can say this without hesitation:

I’ve made it.

But not in the way I used to define it.

Not by titles. Not by income. Not by the car. Not by the external validation I spent so many years chasing.

Because if I’m honest—

I didn’t build my early life from a place of alignment.

I built it from a place of proving.

The Pattern I Didn’t See (Until I Did)

I was raised by an emotionally immature mother—what many would recognize as narcissistic.

A dynamic more common than we talk about.

These are parents who struggle to see their children as independent beings. Instead, their children become extensions of them.

And when those children begin to grow, question, and become their own person—

The response often shifts.

Control. Manipulation. Withdrawal. Silence used as punishment.

Verbal abuse. Gaslighting. Triangulation. The kind of silence that can last months… even years.

And yet, from the outside?

They can look loving. Charming. Devoted.

Especially when their children are young— adoring, compliant, and not yet questioning.

It creates a deeply disorienting reality.

One where you spend years trying to earn love that was never meant to be conditional in the first place.

How It Shows Up Later

For me, it turned into a relentless pursuit of external validation.

I became the high achiever. The athlete. The one who needed to be the best.

In school. In sports. In my career.

And I did it.

I built the career. I made the money. I checked the boxes.

On paper, I was successful.

But underneath it all, I was still operating from the same unconscious belief:

“If I achieve enough, I will finally be enough.”

The Shift No One Talks About

The real turning point didn’t happen at the height of my success.

It happened when I stepped away.

When I stayed home with my children. When the noise quieted. When I was no longer getting constant feedback from the outside world telling me who I was.

That’s when everything surfaced.

That’s when the real work began.

Layer by layer, I started to untangle:

What was mine… and what was never mine to carry.

I started to see the patterns clearly.

And here’s the truth most people don’t prepare you for:

The healthier you become, the less you tolerate dysfunction— and the more those dynamics push back.

For me, that looked like:

More distance. More silence. More withdrawal.

But this time—

I didn’t chase it.

The Moment Everything Clicked

Because I finally understood something that changed everything:

What I was made to feel about myself was not truth. It was conditioning.

And I no longer needed to participate in it.

That’s when the shift happened.

Not externally.

Internally.

What Success Looks Like Now

If you looked at my life years ago, it might have looked more “successful.”

I had the career. The income. The external markers.

Now?

I’m building a business from the ground up. I’m in the messy middle. I drive a modest car.

And I have never been more at peace.

Because I no longer define success by external metrics.

I define it by:

– The work I feel called to do – The way I show up for my children – The ability to give and receive love freely – The clarity of my mind – The openness of my heart

Success is alignment.

Not performance.

Not perfection.

Not optics.

Why This Matters More Than We Think

Here’s where this becomes bigger than just my story.

We are now seeing—both clinically and anecdotally—that unresolved emotional patterns don’t just live in the mind.

They live in the body.

And for many women, they surface later in life as:

Chronic tension

Pain patterns

Nervous system dysregulation

Hormonal disruption

Autoimmune Diseases

More intense perimenopause and menopause symptoms

This is not just mindset.

This is physiology.

This Became My Life’s Work

This realization is what led me to build what I’m building today.

As the founder of Pilates Lab, creator of The LAB Method™, and pioneer of Pilates Biohacking™—

My work is centered around one idea:

Healing doesn’t happen in pieces. It happens in integration.

We use movement not as punishment— but as a way to uncover your body’s story.

Through biomechanics/somatic-driven Pilates, we identify patterns, imbalances, and compensation strategies that have often been there for years.

We pair that with nervous system regulation— through tools like NuCalm or immersive sound journeys…

Because you cannot heal a body that feels unsafe.

And we layer in advanced recovery modalities:

Medical-grade red and near-infrared light PEMF Power Plate Targeted nutrition Hormone support

Not as trends.

But as tools to support cellular, structural, and emotional resilience.

The Real Goal

The goal isn’t just to feel better.

It’s to become:

More aware More regulated More connected More powerful

To move through midlife not depleted—

But rebuilt.

If You See Yourself in This

I know it’s easier to minimize this kind of work.

To say: “It wasn’t that bad.” “I’m fine.” “I’ll deal with it later.”

But if you recognize yourself in any part of this—

Do the work.

Do it for you. Do it for your children. Do it for the life you actually want to live.

Because the real flex isn’t success the way we were taught.

It’s this:

Peace. Clarity. A regulated nervous system. A life that feels like your own.

At 45

I can finally say this…

Not from performance

Not from proving

But from truth:

I’m there.

And this is just the beginning.

The End of Fitness as We Know It

Why the next era of movement will be smaller, smarter, and built for longevity

Vitality Vault Lifestyle

Why the next era of movement will be smaller, smarter, and built for longevity

I spent years inside startup culture—building, scaling, operating in high-performance environments where output was everything.

And on the other side of that world, I saw something clearly:

We’ve optimized for performance.

But we’ve neglected the body that produces it.

Chronic stress.

Nervous system dysregulation.

Burnout disguised as discipline.

And a wellness industry that, in many cases, reinforces the same patterns it claims to solve.

More intensity.

More volume.

More “push.”

But not more intelligence.

This is where the disconnect begins.

Because the body—especially in midlife—does not respond to more force.

It responds to better inputs.

To alignment.

To intelligent loading.

To recovery that actually restores.

This is why I built Pilates Lab and created , Pilates Biohacking™, powered by The LAB Method™ (Lengthen. Do life.

Why This Matters More Than Ever for Women

Because this isn’t just fitness.

It’s physiology.

Starting in your 30s, muscle mass begins to decline:

3–8% per decade

Accelerating after 50

Amplified during perimenopause and menopause

In many women, that loss can reach up to 15% per decade if unaddressed.

This is sarcopenia.

And it affects:

metabolism

bone density

strength and balance

long-term independence

Even with strength training, midlife requires more precision, more intention, and more consistency—not less.

This is not the season to treat movement casually.

The Aesthetic Regression

At the same time, we’re watching a cultural shift.

A return to a thinner ideal.

A quieter version of 90s “wellness.”

And Pilates is being pulled into that narrative.

But Pilates was never about making your body smaller.

It was about making it better.

More capable.

More resilient.

More connected.

Reducing it to an aesthetic trend isn’t just inaccurate.

It’s a disservice.

Before It Was Trending, It Was Transformational

When I first started doing Pilates, there was no Instagram.

No one was curating their life.

No one was building a personal brand around their workout.

No one was showing up to be seen.

You showed up to feel better.

To get out of pain.

To understand your body.

To solve something no one else had been able to fix.

That distinction matters.

Because what we’re seeing now—curated wellness, influencer culture, aesthetic-driven movement—has fueled demand.

But it’s also shifted the reason people show up.

Aesthetic vs. Environment

I believe deeply in creating a beautiful space.

Pilates Lab is intentionally calm, minimal, and elevated.

Not for aesthetics alone—but for physiology.

Because your nervous system responds to your environment.

A cluttered space creates noise.

A clear space creates awareness.

It allows you to slow down.

To focus.

To feel.

That’s where real change begins.

Where This Is All Going

Here’s what I believe is coming next.

People are getting tired.

Tired of the performance.

Tired of the curation.

Tired of looking like they’re well instead of actually being well.

And as Pilates grows, there will be a shift:

From aesthetic → to expertise

From trend → to training

From image → to outcome

Toward teachers who actually understand the body.

Especially as we see a growing population—particularly baby boomers—who need movement for:

      mobility

      rehabilitation

independence

This is where Pilates, when taught properly, becomes essential.

The Moment That Changed Everything for Me

This is personal.

I had a foot injury no one could solve.

I went to top specialists—even at Stanford.

No answers.

No one suggested strengthening.

No one looked at the system.

It was all symptom-based.

It wasn’t until I started private Pilates—and learned the mechanics and strength of the foot—that everything changed.

I did the work.

And it resolved.

That experience changed my entire trajectory.

Because it showed me:

The body isn’t broken.

It’s often just misunderstood.

Why We Went the Other Way

At Pilates Lab, we made a deliberate decision.

While the industry moved toward:

     bigger

      louder

more volume

We moved toward:

      smaller

      more precise

more connected

Because you cannot build awareness in noise.

You cannot refine movement without being seen.

And you cannot create lasting change without feeling your body.

Consistency Is the Real Luxury

Not the outfit.

Not the aesthetic.

Not the trend.

Consistency.

The ability to return to something again and again.

That’s where strength is built.

That’s where longevity is protected.

Final Thought

Pilates being popular isn’t the problem.

But confusing visibility with value is.

So choose your movement.

But stop treating it like a phase.

Treat it like a practice.

Because trends will come and go.

But the way you care for your body?

That stays.

xoxo,

Your former Journalist/PR Major + tech sales chica turned Pilates founder and Educator

Shannon Barbaro, Pilates Lab and Vitality Vault Lifestyle

The Scarcity of Presence

I built my early career inside venture-backed security startups in Silicon Valley.

Vitality Vault Lifestyle

I built my early career inside venture-backed security startups in Silicon Valley.

I understand scale.

I respect capital.

Pilates Lab is, in many ways, my second startup.

So when I talk about what’s happening in Pilates right now, it isn’t criticism.

It’s pattern recognition.

AI is about to make workouts infinite.

Investor capital is making studio models more efficient.

Density is increasing.

Programming is flattening.

Throughput is becoming strategy.

There is nothing inherently wrong with that.

Scale sharpens operations.

Scale expands access.

Scale builds powerful brands.

But scale optimizes for what can be repeated.

And Pilates, at its highest level, is not infinitely repeatable.

It is tactile intelligence.

It is a teacher noticing your rib cage doesn’t expand on the right.

It is adjusting load because you didn’t sleep well.

It is recognizing nervous system dysregulation before it becomes injury.

It is understanding midlife physiology in real time.

It is layering strength and recovery based on the person standing in front of you.

AI can optimize programming.

It cannot perceive.

As digital wellness scales, something else becomes scarce:

Human calibration.

Midlife women — the most financially powerful demographic in wellness — don’t need more burn.

They need:

Nervous system literacy.

Bone density strategy.

Fall-risk reduction.

Load progression that preserves independence.

Recovery that is integrated, not optional.

They need to be seen.

I’ve been approached multiple times to scale Pilates Lab through outside capital.

I’ve declined — not because I’m anti-growth, but because growth without alignment dilutes vision.

If I ever partner, it will be with capital that understands:

Small can be strategic.

Precision creates defensibility.

High-touch is not a limitation — it’s a moat.

Pilates Lab isn’t scaling for volume.

We’re refining for depth.

Smaller rooms.

Deeper teaching.

Integrated recovery — red and near-infrared light, nervous system reset, vibration training.

Hormone-aware strength layered through The LAB Method: Lengthen. Align. Biohack.

This isn’t resistance to innovation.

It’s evolution beyond replication.

The future of Pilates won’t be defined by how many reformers you can fit into a room.

It will be defined by how deeply you can see the one standing in front of you.

And as our lives become more automated, more optimized, more connected — what we will crave most cannot be streamed.

It must be felt.

Spaces where you are known.

Rooms where your nervous system settles.

Experiences that recalibrate you in real time.

Movement that strengthens not just your body, but your independence.

This is the direction I’m building toward.

Not louder.

Not denser.

More intentional.

More embodied.

I’m currently developing a high-touch, in-person retreat experience rooted in this philosophy — an immersive environment where movement, recovery, and nervous system reset are integrated in a way that carries beyond a weekend and into real life.

Not an escape.

A recalibration.

If this resonates, stay close.

Presence is becoming rare.

And rare things become valuable.

—

Shannon Barbaro

Founder, Pilates Lab

Creator, The LAB Method

Startup builder turned longevity architect

I read something recently that stopped me.

“Mothers without a Mum are the ones no one comes back for.”

I sat with it longer than I expected.

Not because it was dramatic.

Because it was precise.

And I started thinking about how many women in midlife are quietly living inside that sentence.

When you become a mother, the world rushes toward the baby.

Meals arrive.

People hold the newborn.

Questions are asked about sleep schedules and milestones.

But the mother herself often stands in the background.

And if her own mother is absent — emotionally, physically, or relationally — that absence becomes louder.

Motherhood has a way of exposing it.

The Layer We Don’t Talk About

This isn’t just emotional.

It’s physiological.

In perimenopause, estrogen fluctuates. The nervous system becomes more reactive. Cortisol sensitivity shifts. Inflammation can rise more easily. Recovery slows. Sleep lightens.

For many women, what felt manageable in their 30s suddenly feels heavier.

And I began noticing a pattern — not just in myself, but in women I work with.

High-functioning. Capable. Responsible.

Women who were often the stable ones early in life. The emotional regulators. The parentified child.

Now they are raising children, running businesses, navigating aging parents — and carrying a nervous system that has been “on” for decades.

That doesn’t disappear just because you’re strong.

It shows up in the body.

Jaw tension.

Pelvic floor guarding.

Right shoulder elevation.

Digestive disruption.

Autoimmune flares.

Exhaustion that doesn’t fully resolve.

You can optimize hormones.

You can lift heavy.

You can eat clean.

But if your nervous system is still bracing, your body is building on instability.

Why This Matters to Me

Pilates has always been, in many ways, the original biohack.

Move the spine in all planes.

Strengthen with awareness.

Build control and breath before load.

That foundation changed how I understood my own body.

It allowed me to see where I guard. Where I collapse. Where I compensate.

It allowed me to build true strength in midlife — not just muscle, but stability.

And over time, I realized something else:

Movement alone is not enough.

You cannot out-train dysregulation.

You cannot build resilience without recovery.

That realization is why Pilates Lab evolved beyond just reformers.

It became intelligent programming paired with neuromuscular stimulation, photobiomodulation, and nervous system down-regulation. It became experiences like Sonic Sculpt — movement for structure, sound for recalibration, community for tethering.

Because midlife women don’t just need more intensity.

They need regulation.

The Invisible Burden

There is a particular weight carried by women who are raising children while still healing from not being mothered themselves.

It’s subtle.

It shows up when your child is sick and you wish someone older was in the room.

It shows up when you’re exhausted and no one thinks to ask if you’re okay.

It shows up when you are breaking patterns without a template.

Many women in their 40s are simultaneously:

Building careers.

Pivoting professionally.

Caring for elders.

Raising children.

Managing homes.

And doing it without feeling fully supported.

That kind of sustained load isn’t just psychological. It’s biological.

Research increasingly links chronic stress, attachment patterns, inflammatory states, and autoimmune expression. Add hormonal fluctuation to that mix, and the nervous system becomes even more central.

This isn’t about blame.

It’s about awareness.

Because awareness creates options.

What I’m Building Toward

If you follow my work, you know I talk about strength, load, optimization, and midlife muscle.

All of that matters.

But so does the quieter layer.

Regulation.

Support.

Community.

Spaces where women can exhale without performing strength.

Ending patterns that no longer serve you changes everything — for you and for the people who come after you.

And you deserve support while you do it.

If this resonated, I’d love to hear from you 🤍

What If 2026 Is the Year We Stop Performing and Start Thinking Again?

There’s something strange about Substack.

Vitality Vault Lifestyle

There’s something strange about Substack.

It feels like home to me.

The writing.

The nuance.

The space for layered thought.

The ability to build an idea instead of compressing it into a hook.

With my background in journalism and PR, long-form feels natural. I love the architecture of ideas. I love building a case. length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

Being a business owner means holding two truths at once:

You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.

And you’re nowhere near where you’re going.

That tension never resolves.

You just get better at living in it.

I saw that quote this week and it hit me in the chest.

Because that’s entrepreneurship.

And I was made for it.

Before Pilates Lab.

Before Pilates Biohacking.

Before the reformers and the red light and the branding and the debt and the risk —

I worked in startup tech.

Corporate business development. Strategic accounts manager. Early-stage growth teams.

I loved it.

The pace.

The pressure.

The long days.

The travel.

The building.

There is something about building something from the ground up that wakes you up in a way nothing else can.

You don’t just show up for a job.

You show up for a vision.

When I left tech and started studying Pilates, I didn’t realize I was stepping into my next startup.

But that’s exactly what happened.

Pilates is not just a workout.

If you think Pilates is a workout, you’re likely experiencing the investor-modified version of it — the mass-produced, music-blasting, sweat-and-burn model. The same thing that happened to yoga. The same thing that happened to SoulCycle. It’s what happens when something intelligent gets packaged for scale.

True Pilates is not about exhaustion.

It’s about awareness.

It’s a body discovery system.

It’s intelligent loading.

It’s understanding your asymmetries.

It’s noticing how you compensate.

It’s learning your nervous system.

It’s recalibrating again and again.

It’s a mirror.

When I went deeper into the method — really studied it — I realized I wasn’t just falling in love with movement.

I was building something again.

Pilates Lab was not an accident.

Pilates Biohacking was not a trend pivot.

It was the same builder instinct I had in tech — redirected into wellness.

Entrepreneurship in midlife is not clean.

It’s messy.

There is never a “good time.”

There is never a stable, quiet, low-risk window where everything aligns and someone hands you permission.

You start with debt.

You start with uncertainty.

You start with people not understanding what you’re doing.

You start with friends questioning your pivot.

You start with nights where you wake up at 3 a.m. wondering if you’re insane.

And sometimes, you question yourself — not because you don’t believe in the vision — but because you wonder if you have the stamina for the middle.

The internet romanticizes entrepreneurship.

It does not show the identity shedding required.

Midlife entrepreneurship is different.

You’re not naive anymore.

You know exactly what you’re risking.

You have kids.

You have a mortgage.

You have a reputation.

And still — something inside you says, build.

If you feel stalled right now…

If you’re sitting in a version of your life that feels safe but small…

If you’re telling yourself “maybe next year” or “once things settle” —

There is no settling.

There is no perfect start date.

You can pivot at 44.

You can pivot on a Tuesday.

You can pivot in the middle of the year.

You can begin messy.

Entrepreneurship will expose you.

Your ego.

Your scarcity.

Your control issues.

Your fear of being seen.

Your need for validation.

It is personal development on steroids.

But it will also stretch you into the strongest version of yourself.

That tension — grateful for what you have and hungry for what’s next — doesn’t go away.

I am proud of what I’ve built.

And I am nowhere near done.

Both are true.

I didn’t leave corporate to relax.

I left to build something that felt alive.

If you’re in midlife and feel the itch to build something — don’t ignore it.

It doesn’t have to be a studio.

It doesn’t have to be a brand.

It doesn’t have to be public.

But it has to be yours.

You were not designed to shrink into safety.

You were designed to build.

And sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is start — even when it’s inconvenient, imperfect, and uncomfortable.

Especially then.

If this resonated, share it with someone quietly sitting on an idea.

And if you’re building something — even if you’re still in the messy middle — I’d love to hear what you’re creating.

xoxo,

Pilates Lab Shan

What Midlife Bodies Actually Need (and Why the Internet Keeps Getting It Wrong)

There’s a conversation I keep seeing play out online—and honestly, in studios, gyms, and everyday conversations too.

Pilates versus weights.

Strength training versus mobility.

“This works.”

“That’s a waste of time.”

It’s exhausting. And it’s missing the point.

Here’s the reality that rarely gets talked about: most people are not over-exercising. They’re under-moving. Far under the recommended amount of daily physical activity.

So before we shame someone for choosing Pilates over lifting, walking over HIIT, or yoga over “real strength,” we need to zoom out.

The issue isn’t what people are choosing.

The issue is that most people aren’t being given a strategy that actually matches their stage of life.

What Worked at 20 Doesn’t Work Forever

Exercising the way you did in your 20s will eventually stop serving you in midlife.

Not because your body is broken—but because your needs have changed.

In your 20s, movement is often about aesthetics, intensity, or performance.

In midlife, it needs to support bone density, joint health, nervous system regulation, pain management, and long-term independence.

You are no longer training for a summer body.

You are training for your future self.

Getting up and down off the floor.

Carrying groceries without pain.

Reaching overhead without compensation.

Traveling, hiking, living—without your body becoming the limiting factor.

That shift matters.

The Problem With “Just Lift Heavy” Messaging

I love strength training. Not only do I recommend it and practice it myself, I’ve also invested in NASM Certified Personal Trainer education so I could understand exercise science in its entirety more deeply.

But what gets lost in social media soundbites is this: you cannot load a system that doesn’t know how to support itself.

I see this constantly with midlife clients who are sedentary, in pain, or managing chronic issues.

A doctor says, “You need to lift weights.”

Instagram says, “Lift heavy or lose muscle.”

So people jump into classes designed for already-conditioned bodies.

That’s not strength. That’s stress.

Adding load to a body that hasn’t regained alignment, coordination, or proprioception is like putting weight on a frame that’s already compromised.

This is where Pilates isn’t optional—it’s foundational.

How Pain Changed the Way I See Movement

I didn’t plan to specialize in pain management.

I came to Pilates because of severe, nonspecific chronic neck pain. Tech neck. Constant tension. No clear diagnosis.

I did the imaging.

Saw the specialists.

Heard, “Everything looks normal.”

But the pain was very real.

What ultimately changed everything wasn’t more neck work—it was addressing my hips, pelvic floor, and how my body was transferring load.

Once my foundation came back online, the neck pain resolved.

That experience reshaped how I understand bodies.

Pain rarely lives where it shows up.

And strength only works when the system underneath it is organized.

Pilates and Strength Belong Together

When someone says to me, “I just want to do Pilates,” my response is honest.

You don’t need only Pilates.

You need Pilates and strength.

Pilates builds joint awareness, coordination, load distribution, and deep stability. Strength training reinforces that foundation.

The goal isn’t maximal output.

The goal is durable capacity.

Training for a body that supports your life, not just your workouts.

Consistency Beats Intensity

Another truth that doesn’t get enough airtime: most people aren’t seeing results because they’re not on a program long enough for it to work.

The best strength programs are built intentionally.

Dropping in once every few weeks won’t create adaptation—it creates frustration.

Daily movement matters more than perfect workouts.

Recovery days are still movement.

Walking, Pilates, yoga, mobility, hiking, playing with friends—it all counts.

Your body doesn’t need extremes.

It needs regular input.

Start small.

Commit to 20 minutes of intentional movement a day.

Track it.

Protect it.

Watch what changes.

Let’s Stop Hating on Movement Choices

If someone is moving consistently, that’s a win.

If someone needs to rebuild their foundation before loading it, that’s wisdom—not weakness.

Midlife doesn’t need louder fitness wars.

It needs better education, smarter sequencing, and more compassion.

Next, I’ll be sharing why I stopped counting macros, why I went to nutrition school anyway, and how intuitive eating actually works better with midlife hormones—not worse.

If you’re here for sustainable strength, pain-free movement, and a body that supports your life—you’re in the right place.

The Skills Gap Is Coming Why the future of Pilates belongs to human expertise, not scale

If the regenerative era of Pilates is a correction, then the next disruption is already underway.

Vitality Vault Lifestyle

A skills gap is coming — and it isn’t driven by artificial intelligence alone.

It’s being driven by scale.

As Pilates has surged in popularity, investment has followed. And with investment comes pressure: larger class sizes, templated programming, faster instructor onboarding, and systems designed to maximize throughput rather than understanding.

This is what happens when a movement method becomes trendy.

Automation doesn’t only come from technology — it comes from business models. From twenty reformers in a room. From choreography designed to work “well enough” for everyone and optimally for no one. From instructors trained to deliver sequences rather than assess bodies.

The result is the same: less skill per client.

When Something Becomes Popular, It Becomes Simplified

Pilates isn’t immune to this cycle.

We’ve seen it before in yoga, cycling, and boutique fitness — rapid growth, rapid replication, and an eventual flattening of depth. What gets lost isn’t movement. It’s literacy.

Bodies aren’t asking for more novelty.
They’re asking for understanding.

Why does my hip hike every time I move my leg?
Why does my QL grip in bridges?
Why does my neck overwork during “core” work?
Why doesn’t progress from physical therapy hold?

These questions cannot be answered in a jam-packed reformer room. They require observation, assessment, and someone who understands the entire Pilates system — not just one apparatus, one format, or one style.

This is where trend ends and expertise begins.

The Next Wave Will Be Smaller, Not Bigger

My prediction is simple: people are going to want less scale and more skill.

They won’t just be reformer-curious — they’ll become Pilates-curious. Curious about the full repertoire. The full apparatus system. How movement, strength, recovery, and the nervous system work together over time.

They’ll seek out professionals who understand evidence-based fitness, biomechanics, and midlife physiology — and who can assess, plan, and adapt rather than cue the same class louder.

This shift won’t be driven by aesthetics.
It will be driven by necessity.

The Aging Curve Will Expose the Skills Gap

As baby boomers retire and the population moves into its mid-60s and beyond, complexity increases. Multiple comorbidities. Joint replacements. Chronic pain. Nervous systems shaped by decades of stress.

There will not be enough skilled professionals to support this population.

That gap is already forming.

And it won’t be filled by apps, automated workouts, or high-volume class models. It will be filled by places that understand movement as part of health care — not entertainment.

Pilates as Transformation, Not a Workout

This is where Pilates, taught as a full system and evolved through modern science, becomes something more than fitness.

It becomes transformation.

A place people go not just to “work out,” but to feel better — in their bodies and in their nervous systems. A place where guarding is understood as communication. Where resistance to change is met with intelligence, not force.

Pilates was the original form of biohacking — designed to keep the spine flexible, the nervous system adaptable, and the body resilient across a lifetime.

The future of Pilates will not belong to the loudest rooms or the fastest growth curves.

It will belong to those who can think, assess, and guide human bodies through change.

The skills gap is coming.
And those who invest in depth now will define what comes next

Are you ready for the next wave?
